Questions

1.  He is using the research and ideas made abut women and brain size over time to show how scientist’s ideas and theory’s change.  He points out how scientist used to not completely qualify their data and not take into account all variables.  Also he points out flaws in the ideas that were purposed by Broca.  He is not so much as making claims about woman and brain size (because he gives support to both sides of the issue) but rather he is making a claim about scientist.

3. In paragraph 12-13 (depending on how you count.  He starts talking about the flaws in research than disscussing the findings.  This is his connecting paragraph.

6.  Its showing how even back then they overlook flaws.  From an out sider view these ideas seem to contradict themselves immensely.

7.  Showing how the old great minds though they may have been off on a few ideas or conclusions are still well respected in todays science world.  Their ideas can still hold some claim.

9.  He reveals his actual thoughts in a straight forward manner.

10.  He appeals to pathos by using old research that made claims against now a day society equals (women).  Words such as 2 headed gorilla, and larger brains, can stir up harsh emotions.

poster + article + blog = a waste of a saturday afternoon (actually more like 1/2 an hour of a saturday)

Posted by xckyle in Uncategorized

Poster:

1. His poster is to encourage people to live their lives, and not let them waste all their time inside watching tv.  It’s meant to be amusing in concept but encouraging in action.

2.  The poster’s tone is simple but not overbearing.  It’s not flatly telling you to go outside but in reality mocking the idea that someone might not know how to and needs this poster for exact instruction of how to do it.  By instructing and not telling/demanding, the poster’s tone is persuasive.  The words I think in panels 1 and 2 are more for amusement, and the other panel’s words are there to say the message he wishes to get across.

3.  Yes because when I’m on a plane, in find that the planes safety picture instructions are not very helpful.  I mean thanks for the advice but I belive I know how to buckle my seat.  The great part about both the airlines posters and DiVio’s poster is that they are both there trying to instruct the public in case of emergency.

Article:

1. That the problem goes beyond tv violence and that the V-chip isn’t truly a society solution to the problem.

2.  He’s trying to widen the view point so that it doesn’t reflect a single case study or situation.  Gerbner responses saying “the argument (about japan) assumes that media violence is the only, or major and always decisive, influence on human social behavior.”  He undermindes his argument by providing a technicality.

3.  They both discuss it’s few good points but then point out that its not truly a solution.

4. That problems run deeper than the violence, but the violence being on tv is not good.  Its effecting Americans view of reality, and that without any restriction of censorship the tv company’s are eroding America’s intellect.

Mean Girls (A movie that from an analyzing view point, isn’t so bad)

Posted by xckyle in Uncategorized

I’ve seen this movie once or twice before yesterday but yesterday was the first time I really saw all the small details and ideas that the movie pokes fun at.  In comparison to Mr. Denby’s article the movie shares many  similarities to the article.  Such as, the idea that the popular girl is like “a princesses, who enjoys the misery of their subjects.  Mr. Denby’s article even points out “she has two or three friends exactly like her, and together they dominate their realm.”  The wicked princesses boy toy though was different in mean girls because although he was a football player he was not a rude and obnoxious guy.  I think that the article was so simular because Mr. Denby was talking about the average teen movie and that’s exactly what Mean Girls is.   So i could compare the two all day but i would much rather prefer to point out a few things.   Like how the queen bee girl’s little sister was coping everything she saw on tv (which I thought was amusing because it was basically that repeating cycle between society and commercialism).  I also really liked how Mean girls incorporated all the types of the teen movies, they had the awkward girl who you learned to relate to, hate, then like again.  They had the goth girl, and gay guy combo which in a way resembles a person in high school that the vast majority could relate to.  Over all in the movie there were plenty of repeating ideas, concepts, and subbliminal messages about the flaws of High school society, and Mean girls did a great job f poking fun at them.  Mr. Denby I think would be amused, if he watched this movie because it’s his views, and things he noticed being narrated by Lindsey Lohan.
