The thing I liked about JFK’s speech is that it read quite like a 5 paragraph essay. Now this may seem odd but I really think it’s exactly that. His first four paragraphs are just like an opening paragraph. His thesis being the entire 4th par. His body paragraphs being the old allies(1), new states(2), neighboring countries(3), united countries(4), and finally (his main topic in all this) adversaries(5).
Things I noticed in each and wish to discuss.
1. I don’t know what its called when someone takes a line/ few words says them one way then rearranges the order and statesthe same words again but with the opposite meaning/effect. This strategy is one that JFK realies heavily on for dramatic effect. He says “United the is little we cannot do…Divided this is little we can do”.
2. I feel like JFK is speaking to annexed nations we’ve gained form the 2 world wars in this section but what I noticed was that his closing sentence “and to remember that, in the past, those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tigerended up inside” The imagery associated with tiger is one of Asian nationality and I just noticed it and wanted to say this that’s all.
3. In this passage JFK strongest phrase is “And let every other power know that this hemisphere intends to remain the master of its own house.” This struck me and stood out because he’s putting America as almost North and South American security or world police. It just stood out as a pretty big claim/statement.
4. He reuniting American belief/faith in the united nations as our last hope. (Also he says instruments of war have far outpaced the instruments of peace. I’m not sure if this is the same thing that he did in #1 but it seems simulare.)
5. All I want to mention here is that he says anew 2 times and he reminds these nations that “civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof”. This makes our offer for peace seem friendlier and coming from a more muture position. (then he does that #1 thing again with fear and negotiate).
Although the final paragraphs are nice all I want to point out in them is that he talks alot about the call of serivce and the call of America. Then with his famous qoute issues the call himself out to America. Besides from this the speech was nice and not so overly dramatic when read instead of heard.
